Our Story
For several years, dog lovers in Pauls Valley, OK, dreamed of an off-leash dog park in town. Most were members of P.A.W.S., the Pauls Valley Animal Welfare Society. Once the community successfully held its first Phil Henderson Memorial Bark in the Park event, the second annual event raised seed money for the dog park. That was in fall 2017, by fall 2018, the necessary funds were raised and the Paws Valley Dog Park officially opened.
The new park is located on the southwest part of the city's Wacker Park. It offers both small- and big-dog areas, complete with water and waste stations, secure walk-in entrances and parking. Once completed in all phases, the 1.5-acre piece of land will include shaded coverings, park benches and perhaps other dog agility amenities.
Paws Valley is the only off-leash dog park between Ardmore, OK, and Moore, OK -- some 100 miles. It is conveniently located in South Central Oklahoma and accessible from Highway I-35 or US-77.
Generous gifts -- both large and small -- helped achieve our fundraising goal. Major donors were The City of Pauls Valley/Tourism Board, Colley & Company, Pauls Valley National Bank, and the Chickasaw Nation. A key feature of the park are the park benches donated in honor or memory of friends and loved ones.
An off-leash dog park is a secured area restricted to dogs and their owners. More than just room to roam, the creation of a dog park allows dogs to exercise and socialize safely in a park like setting. Dog parks are being established around the country and offer a wealth of benefits to dogs, their owners and the community as a whole. Twenty minutes of dog park exercise equates to two hours of on-leash walking.
Based on national standards, Pauls Valley has 1,000 owner-loved dogs. Those puppies and adult dogs need room to run. Enclosed play areas permit them to do so while preventing them from endangering themselves and others. Dogs, who are accustomed to playing with animals and people other than their owner, are more likely to be well socialized and react well toward strangers.
